Colgate University raises $480 million

Colgate University President Jeffery Herbst and other school officials rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange in celebration Friday morning, marking the end of a capital campaign that has raised nearly half a billion dollars.
The university announced Friday that it had raised $480 million since 2007 with its Passion for the Climb campaign, 20 percent more than its original goal of $400 million.
The campaign raised more money that the university's previous five campaigns combined, and is the second highest ever for a liberal arts university.
The money is being used for various purposes, including:
$141.5 million for financial aid
$195.1 million for annual fund and endowment
$82.4 million for liberal arts/academics
$30 million for student life
$31 million other
?Financial aid is the critical priority for Colgate in the years ahead,? Herbst said. ?By expanding access, we open our classrooms to diversity of thought and background - and we ensure that the university is able to admit the world's brightest undergraduates regardless of their financial means.?
Fewer than 3,000 students attend Colgate University, according to its web site.
