BERLIN (AP) ? The Huffington Post is expanding its footprint in Europe with a German language edition.
The online news portal says it is partnering with German company Tomorrow Focus AG to launch the site in Europe's biggest news market this fall.
Tomorrow Focus said in a statement Monday that the site will be produced in Munich and cater to readers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
The Huffington Post already has international editions in Britain, Canada, France, Italy and Spain. A Japanese version is due to launch in May.
The U.S. version of the site was founded by Ariana Huffington in 2005 and bought by AOL Inc. in 2011.

Tuesday, April 23, 2013 [Boston, MA] The scientific poster session, Interventions for the Treatment and Prevention of Nutrition-Related Diseases, included the poster that won first prize in two American Society for Nutrition Scientific Sessions at Experimental Biology (EB) contests the Student Interest Group (SIG) Travel Award competition and the Aging and Chronic Disease Research Interest Section (RIS) Graduate Student Poster competition. The winning poster is based on a clinical study that investigated the effects of eating one Hass avocado every day on risk factors for cardiovascular disease compared to a similar moderate fat diet without avocados, an average American diet and a low-fat diet. The study was conducted by Pennsylvania State University researchers Penny Kris-Etherton, PhD, RD, and Li Wang, PhD Candidate, and supported by the Hass Avocado Board (HAB).
The SIG and RIS awards are annual prizes awarded to PhD students based on their abstracts and presentations at EB. Abstracts were assessed on scientific merit, research design, experimental methodology, conclusions, and significance of findings to scientific knowledge.
Although this was a small-scale study, "Initial findings from our research shows that inclusion of one avocado a day, as part of a healthy moderate fat diet, may contribute to greater benefits on cardiovascular risk factors than a moderate fat diet that provides the equivalent fatty acid profile," said Wang. "While more studies are needed, this research suggests that there may be something unique about the avocado, beyond its monounsaturated fat content."
Additionally, Maxwell Johnson, MS, and Bonny Burns-Whitmore, MPH, DrPH, RD, California State Polytechnic University, presented findings from their investigation on the effects of daily intake of avocados on body composition and blood cholesterol levels in healthy college students during the poster session, Energy Balance, Macronutrients and Weight Management.
"Our research findings showed that eating an avocado a day did not negatively alter body composition," said Burns-Whitmore.

US futures moving higher as corporate profits roll
NEW YORK (AP) ? Stock futures are moving higher on more strong earnings from U.S. corporations, and ahead of new data expected to show that the number of homes being built is approaching levels last seen more than four years ago.
Dow Jones industrial futures are up 53 points to 14,552. S&P futures have added 3.1 points to 1,559. Nasdaq futures are up 12.25 points to 2,809.50.

Nigeria says heavy fighting in northeast, no word on casualties
ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigerian authorities said on Monday there had been heavy fighting between security forces and Islamist militants in a remote part of the northeast, but there was no confirmation of reports from a local official that 185 people had been killed.
Fighting erupted on Thursday in Baga, a fishing town on the shores of Lake Chad, adjacent to the Chadian border, spokesmen for the Borno state government that administers the area and its military said.
A delegation from the state government visited the town on Sunday in the aftermath of the fighting, and a community representative put the death toll at 185, Borno spokesman Umar Gusau said by telephone.
"We are investigating," he said. "For now, we don't have a very good basis for the figure. These people say they have died and they have buried them. From my experience, most times residents exaggerate figures."
He added that since the town had already buried the victims, it had been impossible for authorities to count the bodies.
Authorities were questioning residents about family members who had died to try to estimate the death toll, he said.
Sagir Musa, a spokesman for the mixed military and police Joint Task Force (JTF) in Borno state, also expressed skepticism about the reported toll.
"There was a clash between the Boko Haram terrorists and the JTF but I can tell you is that the death toll was terribly inflated," he said by telephone.
The military is sometimes accused by locals of understating civilian casualties in fighting.
The violence comes as the government awaits a report from a panel tasked with formulating an offer of amnesty for the insurgents if they give up their struggle for an Islamic state, which has killed many hundreds in northern Nigeria in the past three years.
President Goodluck Jonathan wants the panel to establish links with the group, which has so far shown no interest in peace talks.
Jonathan, a Christian southerner, has been unsuccessful in quelling the violence through military means and, in recent weeks, traditional leaders in the predominantly Muslim north have put pressure on him to offer Boko Haram a deal.
If 185 people did die in the Baga fighting, it would be the greatest loss of life in the conflict since 186 people were killed in coordinated strikes by Boko Haram fighters in January 2012 in the north's main city of Kano.
Gusau said parts of Baga were badly damaged when he visited it on Sunday, with several houses burned. He said Nigerian soldiers sometimes over-react when attacked by Boko Haram gunmen, killing many in retaliation.
Boko Haram, which is loosely modeled on the Taliban movement in Afghanistan, wants an Islamic caliphate in Nigeria, a country of 170 million split evenly between Christians and Muslims.

As Margaret Thatcher was in life, so are the tweets that have followed her death.
In the minutes following the announcement of the former British prime minister's death Monday, #Thatcher shot to the top of global Twitter trends as the world weighed in on her legacy ? or at least as much of it as they could cram into 140 characters or less.?
Here are some highlights of the global Twitter reaction.?
Official response
World leaders were among the first to weigh in on Thatcher's legacy with carefully curated messages of condolence.
"Lady Thatcher didn?t just lead our country, she saved our country," wrote @David_Cameron, the official Twitter account of the British Prime Minister. (And the snarky backlash quickly followed. "From equality and happiness?" one tweeter replied, one of some 2,000 who responded to the prime minister's initial tweet. "Just how out of touch can one man be?" asked another.)??
"She stands as an example to our daughters that there is no glass ceiling that can?t be shattered," weighed in @BarackObama, while?India's prime minister, Manmohan Singh (@PMOIndia) wrote blandly,?"She was a transformative figure under whom the United Kingdom registered important progress on the national and international arena."
And the BBC sent along a message from Mikhail Gorbachev, tweeting: '#Thatcher "a great politician & bright personality" who will "remain in our memory & history"'
But in at least one corner of the world where Thatcher's legacy is particularly fraught, there was silence on official Twitter accounts.
"Waiting for an official comment from Buenos Aires re?#Thatcher's?death," tweeted the BBC's Argentina correspondent. "Under her govt Britain went to war with?Argentina?over the Falklands."
'Like a tank barrel'
Elsewhere in the Twitter-verse, reactions were more raucous, mixing critiques and memories of the Iron Lady's towering personality.?
"Condolences to my British friends for the 1980s," wrote Nigerian-American writer Teju Cole (@tejucole).
"Asking Thatcher a q at a press conf was intimidating," remembered Australian journalist Mark Colvin (@Colvinius). "Her gaze swivelled on you like a tank-barrel."?
He continued: "A friend of mine, interviewing Thatcher, asked her qs she didn't like. Just out of camera view, her press sec kicked him in the shins."
And one Canadian journalist weighed in to make sure a crucial aspect of the prime minister's legacy wasn't forgotten in the chatter. "Most of what Thatcher is claimed to have done is exaggerated," he wrote. "Except inventing soft ice cream - as a chemist in the '50s, she did that."
The empire tweets back
Meanwhile, across the British commonwealth, tweeters pondered the Thatcher legacy in their own backyard.
"Before there was Thatcher, there was [Indian Prime Minister] Indira Gandhi. Just saying. Apparently the two got along well," wrote Indian journalist?Ammu Kannampilly.
South Africans were less generous. "Apartheid supporter Margaret Thatcher dead at last," wrote a popular opinion writer. "Apartheid would've ended a little earlier had it not been for her," said another.?
And Irish comedy writer Colm Tobin put a finger on?his country's national pulse?when it came to Thatcher's legacy: "Not a lot of love for Margaret Thatcher in Ireland. As an enemy of the state she sits somewhere between Oliver Cromwell & Thierry Henry."
Too fast??
Amid the global haste to weigh on on Thatcher's death, however, Twitter also provided reminders about the dangers of the digital age scramble to be the first to a story.?
Thatcher detractors, for instance, gleefully circulated a BBC-based headline typo announcing that Thatcher had "died of a strike."
Meanwhile, the opening paragraph of the Financial Times' obituary for Thatcher briefly revealed what one tweeter called "the perils of the pre-packaged obit."?
The text was quickly corrected, but not before it was immortalized on Twitter, a moment of clumsy reaction captured in Internet amber for all the world to see.
None of the Twitter reaction, however, came as a shock to British journalist Martin Belam. In December he tweeted a pie chart he'd created called, "What Twitter will look like on the day Thatcher dies."?

SNOQUALMIE PASS, Wash. (AP) ? A woman who had been buried in five feet of snow has died, and one man was still missing Sunday morning after a pair of spring avalanches struck separate groups hiking in the mountains each of Seattle, authorities in Washington state said.
Sgt. Katie Larson, with the King County Sheriff's Office, said a team of rescuers worked through the night in blizzard-like conditions to carry the female snowshoer off the mountain just after midnight.
She was not moving and had been in and out of consciousness. Medics confirmed that she had died when they reached the base of the mountain, Larson said.
"The conditions yesterday were horrific," Larson said Sunday. "It took 25 rescuers about five to six hours" to bring her off the mountain in a sled.
The woman, whose identity was not known, had been hiking with her dog near a group of a dozen other people Saturday afternoon when an avalanche hit Red Mountain near Snoqualmie Pass east of Seattle.
She had been buried in five feet of snow but was dug out with the help of a group of a dozen snowshoers, who had also been caught in the avalanche.
Members of the group told authorities that it took them 45 minutes to find the woman. They dug her out of five feet of snow. "They did their best to try to warm her up," Larson said.
Meanwhile, the search for a 60-year-old hiker who was swept down the mountain in a separate avalanche at Granite Mountain Saturday was suspended indefinitely due to the poor weather conditions.
"There was a heavy snow dump last night, and conditions are still very hazardous," Larson said.
The man, from Kent, Wash., was with two other friends when the avalanche carried them more than 1,200 feet down the mountain. The two friends suffered injuries that described as not life-threatening. One of them was taken to a hospital, but Larson did not know his condition.
The avalanches occurred as heavy snow fell near Snoqualmie Pass.

Books written by professors who teach at universities in Spain and Italy are the first winners of the Centesimus Annus - Pro Pontifice Foundation?s ?economy and society? book award.
Ciudadania, migraciones y religion: Un dialogo etico desde la fe cristiana (Citizenship, Migration, and Religion: Ethical Dialogue from the Christian Faith) was written by Father Julio Luis Mart?nez, SJ, rector of Comillas Pontifical University in Madrid; L'economia del bene comune (The Economy of the Common Good) was written by Stefano Zamagni of the University of Bologna.
Named after Blessed John Paul II?s 1991 social encyclical and founded by the same Pope two years later, the foundation exists to promote Catholic social teaching.
The first book, said Cardinal Domenico Calcagno, president of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See,
highlights the fact that in the context of waning national sovereignty immigration calls for a new understanding of both the concept of citizenship and the relationship between religion and politics. Citizenship, belonging to a country, is traditionally part of one?s identity. But what does citizenship mean in a multicultural society, made up of people from widely different backgrounds? How can one reach out to the "stranger" without jeopardizing one?s identity? How can one relate to this stranger, his religion ? which is often not the host country?s ? without falling into relativism? Fr. Mart?nez is convinced that the Social Doctrine of the Church can provide real help, actually an indispensable contribution, towards an adequate answer to these questions.
Cardinal Calcagno, who oversees the activity of the foundation, stated that the second book
suggests we need to widen the range of fundamental categories that allow us to understand economic activity. Against a dominant model which considers market and State the only major economic players, Zamagni presents a third sphere of values (solidarity, entrepreneurship, sympathy) which neither efficiency nor a search for justice can fulfill. He is convinced that without these values of fraternity and reciprocity market and State cannot function. He believes in the need to make room for an economic space within the market (not outside or against it) where players are inspired by the principle of solidarity.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) ? Sergio Garcia is still chasing that first major title.
It never figured to come at Augusta National.
But there he was Thursday, after a bogey-free opening round, sharing the top spot on the leaderboard at the Masters.
"Obviously, this is not my most favorite place," Garcia said, trying to be diplomatic. "But we try to enjoy it as much as we can every time we come here. Sometimes it comes out better than others. Today was one of those good days. Let's enjoy it while it lasts."
Garcia's 6-under 66 tied him with Aussie Marc Leishman, on a cloudy day that was made for going low. There wasn't much wind until late in the afternoon, when a storm front approached Augusta. There wasn't a blistering sun to bake out the greens, which were receptive to accurate shots.
The Spaniard took advantage, rekindling memories of the teen phenom known as "El Nino," who seemed certain to win numerous major titles after he battled with Woods at the 1999 PGA Championship, losing by a single stroke.
Garcia has challenged in other majors, but rarely at the Masters ? a course that doesn't seem to fit his style or shaky putter. In 14 previous appearances at Augusta National, he has finished in the top 10 only twice.
Last year, after a dismal third round took him out of contention, he bluntly conceded that he didn't think he was capable of winning a major.
Obviously, he feels different now ? though there's still some trepidation in his voice about what's still to come.
"Every time I tee off in a tournament, the goal is to play the best I can and have a chance at winning. That doesn't change this week," Garcia said. "Today was a nice day, one of those days you really enjoy. Hopefully I'll have three more of those and we'll see what happens on Sunday night."
With all eyes on Tiger Woods, the overwhelming favorite, plenty of others stood out amid the azaleas and towering Georgia pines.
There was Leishman, who had played two whole rounds at Augusta National.
There was David Lynn, a Masters rookie who was just two strokes back.
Lynn was the early clubhouse leader, then Leishman surged to the front with four straight birdies on the back side starting at No. 13. The Australian sure didn't play like someone who had missed the cut in his only other Masters appearance, in 2010.
"The first time I was here," Leishman recalled, "I was like a bit of a deer in headlights, I guess. I found myself looking around a little bit too much and not concentrating on getting the ball in the hole."
He was hardly on a roll coming into Augusta, having missed the cut in his two previous PGA Tour events. But it all came together, for one day at least.
"To be sitting here is pretty cool," Leishman said. "But it's only Thursday afternoon, so a lot of golf to play."
No Australian has ever won the Masters.
Lynn, a runner-up to Rory McIlroy in last year's PGA Championship, birdied four of five holes around the turn and rolled in a testy 15-foot putt at the final hole to save par.
"It's about playing the percentages," the Englishman said. "When I was on the ninth, I turned to my caddie and said, 'We're leading the Masters.' He just looked at me and smiled. I told him, 'I'd rather be leading it Sunday afternoon.' But it's not a bad thing to see your name up there leading the Masters. That's always something I can look back on."
Lynn moved from the European to the American tour this year, a change that seems to have rejuvenated his passion for the game.
"It's given me a second wind," Lynn said. "Everything is new. I'm going to different places every week, different courses. It's like I've started my career again almost."
Dustin Johnson was one shot off the lead after a 67. Lynn was joined at 68 by a group that included Rickie Fowler, who went on the wildest ride of the day ? a 4-under score despite two double-bogeys.
Jamie Donaldson turned in the shot of the day, acing the 180-yard sixth for the 24th hole-in-one in Masters history. He is only the fifth player to make a 1 at the hole known as Juniper, with its towering tee box and a green at the bottom of the hill. Donaldson was the first to do it since Chris DiMarco in 2004.
Woods was still the favorite after opening with a 70.
But it appears he'll have a lot of competition.
"I felt like I putted well today," said Woods, whose only lower opening-round score at Augusta was a 68 in 2010. "We've got a long way to go. I've just got to out there and play shot for shot. The golf course is going to change dramatically. You've just got to make adjustments."
Woods has already won three times this year and reclaimed his No. 1 spot in the world rankings. But he hasn't captured a major since 2008, and it's been eight long years since he claimed his fourth green jacket at Augusta. He is still four majors shy of tying Jack Nicklaus' record 18 championships ? a mark that becomes a little more daunting each time the 37-year-old Woods fails to win one of golf's biggest events.
Guan Tianlang of China is just getting started. At age 14, he was the youngest player to ever qualify for the Masters, but showed he belonged with a solid 73 that included a 15-foot birdie from the fringe at the final hole.
His playing partner, two-time Masters champion Ben Crenshaw, led the cheers.
"I felt a little bit nervous on the first tee," Guan said. "But I hit a great tee shot and, after that, everything feels comfortable."
Shortly after dawn, the tournament began with ceremonial shots from three of golf's greatest players ? 83-year-old Arnold Palmer, 77-year-old Gary Player and the 73-year-old Nicklaus.
Palmer was clearly pleased with his effort, which settled right in the middle of the fairway. He pumped his right fist as the crowd roared.
"The only nerves are to make sure you make contact," Nicklaus quipped. "It doesn't make a diddly-darn where it goes."

Europe's new space weather center tracks sun storms

The European Space Agency opened a new space weather center last week in Brussels to keep tabs sun storms that could interfere with satellites in orbit and power grids on Earth.
Formally inaugurated on April 3, the Space Weather Coordination Center (SSCC) will gather information on?space weather?and solar storms, as well as disturbances in the Earth's geomagnetic environment and ionosphere. Experts at the center will issue alerts and provide support for satellite operators, government agencies and research institutes whose work might be affected by space weather, according to a statement from ESA.
The SSCC, housed in the Royal?Observatory?of Belgium, is part of ESA's Space Situational Awareness (SSA) program, which keeps track of hazards such as space junk and potentially dangerous?asteroids?that pose a threat to Earth and its systems in orbit.
"With the SSCC inauguration, our SSA Program is taking concrete steps to develop a European capability to operationally monitor space weather, enhance international cooperation and establish the effective distribution of information, warnings and alerts to users in economically vital sectors," astronaut Thomas Reiter, ESA's head of human spaceflight and operations, said in a statement.
"The SSCC will help to get the right information to the right people at the right time," Reiter added.
In the United States, the Space Weather Prediction Center, a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is the official source of space weather alerts, watches and warnings.

Iceman ?tzi had bad teeth
Apr. 9, 2013 ? For the first time, researchers from the Centre for Evolutionary Medicine at the University of Zurich together with colleagues abroad have been able to provide evidence of periodontitis, tooth decay and accident-related dental damage in the ice mummy '?tzi'. The latest scientific findings provide interesting information on the dietary patterns of the Neolithic Iceman and on the evolution of medically significant oral pathologies.
The Neolithic mummy ?tzi (approximately 3300 BC) displays an astoundingly large number of oral diseases and dentition problems that are still widespread today. As Prof. Frank R?hli, head of the study, explains, ?tzi suffered from heavy dental abrasions, had several carious lesions -- some severe -- and had mechanical trauma to one of his front teeth which was probably due to an accident.
Although research has been underway on this important mummy for over 20 years now, the teeth had scarcely been examined. Dentist Roger Seiler from the Centre for Evolutionary Medicine at the University of Zurich has now examined ?tzi's teeth based on the latest computer tomography data and found that: "The loss of the periodontium has always been a very common disease, as the discovery of Stone Age skulls and the examination of Egyptian mummies has shown. ?tzi allows us an especially good insight into such an early stage of this disease," explains Seiler. He specializes in examining dental pathologies in earlier eras.
Advanced periodontitis
The three-dimensional computer tomography reconstructions give an insight into the oral cavity of the Iceman and show how severely he was suffering from advanced periodontitis. Particularly in the area of the rear molars, Seiler found loss of the periodontal supporting tissue that almost extended to the tip of the root. While ?tzi is scarcely likely to have cleaned his teeth, his abrasive diet contributed significantly to a process of self-cleaning. Nowadays periodontitis is connected to cardiovascular diseases. Interestingly, the Iceman also displays vascular calcification, for which -- like in the case of the periodontitis -- mainly his genetic make-up was responsible.
The fact that the Iceman suffered from tooth decay is attributable to his eating more and more starchy foods such as bread and cereal porridge which were consumed more commonly in the Neolithic period because of the rise of agriculture. In addition, the food was very abrasive because of contaminants and the rub-off from the quern, as is demonstrated by the Iceman's abraded teeth. His accident-related dental damage and his other injuries testify to his troubled life at that time. One front tooth has suffered mechanical trauma -- the discoloration is still clearly visible -- and one molar has lost a cusp, probably from chewing on something, perhaps a small stone in the cereal porridge.
?tzi -- the world's oldest wet mummy
The Iceman -- known widely as '?tzi' -- is the oldest wet mummy in the world. Since its discovery in 1991, numerous scientific examinations have taken place. In 2007, for example, also with the involvement of Frank R?hli, ?tzi's cause of death was determined as probably stemming from internal bleeding.

CZESTOCHOWA, Poland (AP) ? Workers are putting the finishing touches on a new statue of the late Pope John Paul II that its backer is calling the tallest one of the pontiff in the world.
The 13.8-meter (45.3-foot) white fiberglass figure will tower over the southern Polish city of Czestochowa, home to the predominantly Catholic country's most important pilgrimage site, the Jasna Gora monastery.
Funded by a private investor and put up on his land, the statue of the Polish-born pontiff shows him smiling and stretching his arms to the world. On Tuesday, workers were joining the pieces together and painting them before the official unveiling of the statue Saturday, to be attended by church and city authorities.
Leszek Lyson, who is funding the project, called the pope "a great and good man who has done a lot for the world: ended communism and opened borders in Europe, reached out to people in his pilgrimages around the world."
He said the statue "should make everyone stop and think about life."
Its construction comes as the traditionally respected church is facing criticism for its conservative views on the family and ethics, and its opposition to abortion, in-vitro fertilization and gay marriage.
Poland has long been predominantly Roman Catholic, but church statistics show attendance shrinking from some 50 percent of parish members in the 1980s; to 45 percent in 2005, the year the pope died; to 41 percent in 2010.
Born Karol Wojtyla in Wadowice, southern Poland, John Paul was elected pope in 1978, a surprise choice from communist-controlled eastern Europe.
In Poland, he is credited with inspiring the Solidarity movement that helped end communism in 1989. His death was a time of national mourning.
Lyson told The Associated Press that he wants the new statue to remind future generations of the Polish pope.
However, 22-year-old Ewelina Gozdek, who was watching the preparations with her friends, was skeptical. "It is an attraction now in a city where nothing ever happens, but will be forgotten soon enough," she said.
The unveiling ceremony will mark three years since Lyson saved his son from drowning and is a sign of thanks.
He is also trying to get the statue into Guinness Book of Records as the world's tallest one of John Paul.
That will generate comparisons with two John Paul statues in other countries.
Last year, an adapted version of a controversial 5.5-meter (18-feet) bronze sculpture of Pope John Paul II went on display in Rome. The original had irked many Romans who said it was ugly and didn't adequately capture the likeness of their beloved pope.
In Santiago, Chile, a small statue of the pope was inaugurated on San Cristobal Hill in 2011, after a proposal to build a 13-meter (43-foot) one was rejected as too big.
Poland already boasts that it has the world's tallest statue of Jesus, unveiled in 2010 in the western town of Swiebodzin.

Carrying insurance for any business operation is not only a prudent move, but in some jurisdictions, it is also mandatory. The process to protect the company and its shareholders is something that will take a painstaking amount of time. The requisite fleet insurance, office insurance, retail insurance, and anything else you need can be structured carefully, in turn saving you a tidy sum in annual premiums.
These days, to get an insurance quote is quite an easy job, thanks to Internet. Whether it is a motor trade insurance online quote or an office insurance quote, you can easily have it online. However, you should not fall for the first quote you get. Make sure, you shop insurance quotes, and only go for the best one.
