A look at Sir Bernard Lovell's achievements
Pioneering astronomer and physicist Sir Bernard Lovell has died aged 98.
Sir Bernard, who was born near Bristol and studied in the city, was the founder of University of Manchester's Jodrell Bank Observatory.
Jodrell Bank and the surrounding Cheshire countryside is dominated by the Lovell Radio Telescope, which was conceived by Sir Bernard.
Professor Brian Cox, who knew Sir Bernard, said he was "an inquisitive scientist all the way".
A book of condolence has been opened at the observatory's Discovery Centre.
Sir Bernard was born in Oldland Common, Gloucestershire, in 1913 and studied at the University of Bristol before joining the University of Manchester's Department of Physics in 1936.
'Visionary leader'During World War II he led a team developing radar technology, for which he was later awarded an OBE.
Following the war, he returned to the university and set about planning the observatory.
His iconic 76m (249ft) telescope was completed in 1957. Within days of it becoming operational, it tracked the rocket that carried Sputnik 1 into orbit.
The structure remains the third largest steerable telescope in the world and plays a key role in global research on pulsating stars, testing extreme physics theories including Einstein's general theory of relativity.
The telescope and his other contributions to radio astronomy led to him being knighted in 1961.
Lord Martin Rees, Astronomer Royal, said: "Bernard Lovell ranks as one of the great visionary leaders of science.
"He had the boldness and self-confidence to conceive a giant radio telescope, and the persistence to see it through to completion, despite the risk of bankruptcy.
"What is even more remarkable is that, more than 50 years later, this instrument (after several upgrades) is still doing 'frontier' science.
"I recall the celebrations of the telescope's 50th anniversary in 2007. Lovell, though nearly blind, played a full part in the festivities and made a superb speech.
"He rightly took great pride in this lasting monument."
A spokesman for the university said Sir Bernard was "warm and generous".
He said the astronomer had "retained a keen interest in the development of science at Jodrell Bank and beyond," and added: "Indeed he continued to come in to work at the Observatory until quite recently when ill health intervened."
'A pioneer'Sir Bernard was also an accomplished musician, a keen cricketer and an internationally-renowned arboriculturalist who created an arboretum at Jodrell Bank.
He is survived by four of his five children, 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Professor Cox, who met Sir Bernard after joining the University of Manchester in the 1990s, said: "I remember once I went to his house and immediately he said 'ah Cox, tell me about this muon' [a sub-atomic particle].
"He knew that I was doing particle physics and thought back to the last time he had thought about such things - he'd been thinking about astronomy for decades - and that's what he wanted to talk about.
"That was him - all his life, he was a scientist.
"He was a pioneer of radio astronomy and almost invented the subject.
"He built the leading telescope and that radio study of the sky has contributed a vast amount to our understanding of the universe."

Sudoku puzzles are like solving simultaneous equations, sometimes it's really easy to fill in a cell - it's the last empty one in a row, for instance. One equation. Sometimes you need to keep track of many cells and their effects to solve them all at once.
The difficulty of a sudoku depends on how many cells have to be solved at once in the most difficult set in the puzzle. There could also be a number of difficult sets that individually are moderately difficult, but taken as a whole require some endurance. Those are probably more satisfying to solve than a puzzle with a huge set, but they're not more difficult.
If I needed a hardness rating, that's what I'd pick - the the number of cells in the largest group that must be solved together. This chaos method offers no fidelity. 0-3 is easy and the hardest puzzle they found to study is 3.6, wth?

Michael Phelps bowed out of swimming with a final flourish on Saturday as poster-girl Jessica Ennis crowned one of British sport's most memorable days with the London Games' signature moment.
As Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake made their first appearance on the track, Phelps left clutching his 18th gold -- and 22nd medal overall -- after the 4x100m medley relay, the climax to races in the Aquatics Centre pool.
But the night's biggest roars were reserved for Ennis, who confirmed heptathlon gold with a surging 800m win that raised the 80,000-capacity Olympic Stadium crowd in a spine-tingling ovation.
Her victory was the highlight of a spectacular day eight for the hosts, who won six golds -- their most on a single day of Olympic competition for more than 100 years.
"I'm just so chuffed, I can't believe it," said the tearful Ennis. "After the javelin I knew I was in for a good score but I couldn't let myself believe it until I crossed the finish line."
As Ennis basked in the stadium applause, Britain's Greg Rutherford was a surprise winner in the long jump. And Mo Farah then sent the crowd into delirium when he won the men's 10,000m.
"It's never going to get better than this, this is the best moment of my life," said Farah.
Thanks to the triple haul -- Britain's most on one day of Olympic athletics -- and wins in rowing and cycling, the home team finished the day third on the medals table on 14 golds, behind the United States (26) and China (25).
"Our finest Olympic hour" was the headline in The Sunday Times, while The Sun tabloid called the gold-medallists, "The Six Pack".
In the pool relay, "Baltimore Bullet" Phelps, swimming the butterfly leg, made up more than half-a-second over his second 50m as he reeled in leaders Japan. Nathan Adrian finished the job with an explosive freestyle close.
The race ended the greatest swimming career in Olympic history, after Phelps' unmatched eight gold medals at Beijing 2008. In London, he outstripped Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina as the most decorated Olympian.
"It's tough to put into words right now," Phelps said. "I did everything I wanted to do."
Earlier, Sun Yang took more than three seconds off his own 1500m world record to seal China's fifth swimming gold -- making it their best Olympics in the pool.
Sun, who flirted with a shock disqualification when he dived in well before the rest of the field, smashed the water repeatedly and cried tears of joy after the race, before getting out and bowing to the stands.
Dutch speedster Ranomi Kromowidjojo completed a sprint double with victory in the women's 50m freestyle, and Missy Franklin led the United States to a 4x100m medley gold in a world record time of 3min 52.05sec.
The win meant the United States finished the pool events with 16 swimming golds, including four for the 17-year-old Franklin, their newest superstar.
South Africa's Oscar Pistorius became the first double amputee to compete in Olympic track athletics as he sprinted into the 400m semis on his specially made, carbon-fibre blades.
"It's just an experience to be here. It's a dream come true," said Pistorius.
Defending 100m champion Bolt clocked 10.09sec in his first round heat for the blue riband event of the Games while Jamaican compatriot Blake timed 10sec.
However, both men were upstaged in front of 80,000 people at the Olympic Stadium by the 9.88sec run by America's Ryan Bailey.
"I expected it, I'm running well, I'm happy, training is great. Reaction was good," said Bolt, whose build-up to the Games had been hit by a number of worrying niggles.
Meanwhile, Serena Williams won the 'Golden Slam' -- all four Grand Slam titles, plus Olympic gold -- with a thumping 6-0, 6-1 win over Maria Sharapova. She will also play Sunday's women's doubles final with her sister Venus.
Britain won two more rowing titles, and also smashed the women's team pursuit cycling world record -- for the third time this week -- to claim their fourth gold out of five so far in the Velodrome.
In badminton, Li Xuerui took the women's singles title before Chinese compariots Zhao Yunlei and Tian Qing claimed the women's doubles.

Family Gives Back to Others Dealing With Brain Cancer | Cancer Kick
ENERGY ? A Williamson County family honors the life of a loved one who lost his battle with brain cancer this year while raising money to help other families facing the same struggles.
It?s the first annual Austin Wade Memorial Give-Back Golf Scramble.
?Awh it?s a blast. Only missing one. Wish he was here,? said Mitch Wade.
More than a hundred golfers teed-off Saturday afternoon at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Energy. The green was covered in red to honor the life of Austin Wade and give-back to others who have a child battling brain cancer.
?It?s amazing that all the people came out on a nasty day like today, well it?s turned out beautiful but on a day like today to help somebody that they don?t know,? insisted Wade.
Austin?s Uncle Mitch organized the event. His 11-year-old nephew lost his one and half year battle with brain cancer in February.
?Never once complained. Never felt sorry for himself. He fought all the way up until the end,? explained Wade.
Now his family says it?s important they make sure others don?t have to fight the battle alone.
?He was always wanting to help others and was a great influence to a lot of people so we?re trying to honor him by doing that,?? said Austin?s mom Denise Diercks.
Diercks insists she couldn?t have made it through without all the help from family, friends, and even strangers.
?I don?t know how we?d have made it through just paying bills and gas money and staying in hotels when we needed to and staying up in St. Louis for weeks at a time,? she explained.
All the money raised will help children like Nigel Woodgett of Mt. Vernon. The 13-year-old was diagnosed with brain cancer in April.
?Thank you for everything,? said Woodgett.
Diercks says the golf scramble is a way of carrying on Austin?s legacy of helping others even during times when he needed it the most.
?He was more concerned about others than he was about himself,? she said. ?And I think he would find this just absolutely wonderful.?
The golf scramble has already raised more than $4,000 for the Austin Wade Foundation.

Tanzania economy grows 7.1 pct year/year in Q1
DAR ES SALAAM (Reuters) - Tanzania's economy grew 7.1 percent year on year in the first three months of the year, faster than 6.1 percent in the same period last year, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Friday.
Like its east African neighbours, the coffee and gold producer -- which has also discovered an estimated 28.9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves -- has been posting some of the fastest growth rates on the continent, fuelled by high commodity prices and growing consumers.
"The generation of electricity and mineral production registered high increase in the economy compared to the similar quarter of 2011," the statistics office said in a statement.
Mining and quarrying expanded by 14.3 percent from 0.8 percent last year, thanks to an increase in production of gold and diamonds, the statistics office said.
Diamond output increased to 57,330 carats from 10,472 carats while gold output more than doubled to 16,736 kilogrammes, the statistics office said.
Farming rebounded, logging growth of 1.4 percent compared with a contraction of 1.2 percent last year. Although the energy sector recorded growth on the back of higher power generation, the country has been struggling with chronic power blackouts.

Plug likely to be pulled on U.N. observers in Syria: France
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The Security Council will most likely not renew the mandate of the U.N. observer mission in Syria later this month, which would require it to pull out of the conflict-torn country, France's envoy to the United Nations said on Thursday.
"I think the mission will disappear on the 19th of August," French Ambassador Gerard Araud, president of the Security Council this month, told reporters. The mandate of the U.N. mission in Syria, known as UNSMIS, expires on that date.
Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin criticized Araud for declaring UNSMIS effectively dead and made clear Moscow would "strongly urge the secretary-general (Ban Ki-moon) to continue with the monitoring component" of UNSMIS after August 19.
In order for the monitors to remain in Syria after August 19, the council would have to adopt a new resolution to that effect. Araud made clear it was difficult to imagine the council reaching agreement to do so.
Ban is expected to deliver a report next week to the 15-nation council with recommendations regarding the future of UNSMIS.
Given international mediator Kofi Annan's decision to step down at the end of the month, which was announced earlier on Thursday, U.N. diplomats said the prospects for securing a diplomatic solution and a truce that could be monitored by UNSMIS were not good.
The U.N. Security Council extended the three-month mandate of the U.N. observer mission in Syria for another 30 days last month. It will decide in a few weeks whether to extend it again.
Araud said the situation on the ground in Syria would have to improve significantly in order for the council to reach an agreement that would keep UNSMIS in place.
Some Western diplomats say they are loath to keep the mission in Syria given that there is no truce for the observers to monitor and neither side in the conflict appears to want a diplomatic solution to the crisis. The United States, they said, was most eager to end the mission's mandate.
The European Union humanitarian affairs commissioner, Kristalina Georgieva, said on Wednesday that UNSMIS' presence had been beneficial for aid delivery.
DIVISIONS 'AS GREAT AS EVER'
Araud described the Security Council as "irreconcilably deadlocked" on the issue of Syria because two of the five permanent veto-wielding members were too far apart in their views for the council to reach an agreement. He did not name the two states, but it was clear he meant Russia and the United States.
Russia, along with China, has vetoed three resolutions on Syria that would have condemned the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and threatened it with possible sanctions.
"The divisions are as great as ever," Araud said. "We can predict a clash."
"The Security Council is deadlocked," he added. "Three vetoes enable us to say that."
The United States and Britain suggested it was Russia and China that undermined Annan's peace efforts by vetoing attempts to pressure Assad to halt his 17-month crackdown against an increasingly militarized opposition determined to oust him. Assad's ally Russia said it was the Western powers that undermined Annan.
UNSMIS' 300 unarmed observers, whose role had been to monitor a failed April 12 ceasefire in Syria brokered by Annan, suspended most activities on June 16 because of increased risk from rising violence. Half of the monitors have already pulled out, but diplomats said there were over 72 civilian staff working on a political solution and monitoring rights problems.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? With Republicans badly split over farm subsidies and cutting food stamps, House GOP leaders Tuesday decided to drop plans to extend the current farm program for one year and instead will press for immediate help for drought-stricken livestock producers.
The decision comes as Republicans feel pressure to do something for drought-hit farmers and ranchers before Congress begins its summer recess.
The party remains stymied by internal divisions between conservatives and farm-state lawmakers on how to proceed with a broader renewal of farm subsidies and the food stamp program.
Republicans initially had announced plans to extend for one year the current farm and food programs, which expire on Sept. 30. But GOP leaders pulled that measure from Wednesday's floor schedule amid continued resistance from many conservatives and after Democrats announced opposition to the measure.
Earlier this month, the House Agriculture Committee approved a new five-year farm bill that would eliminate much-criticized direct payments, under which farmers are paid even when they don't plant a crop, to be replaced with new price and revenue support programs. The Senate passed companion legislation in June.
"My priority remains to get a five-year farm bill on the books and put those policies in place, but the most pressing business before us is to provide disaster assistance to those producers impacted by the drought conditions who are currently exposed," House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas, R-Okla., said. "The House is expected to consider a disaster assistance package on Thursday and I encourage my colleagues to support it."
Minnesota Rep. Collin Peterson, the senior Democrat on the Agriculture Committee, opposes the one-year extension, saying it would doom the chances of a five-year farm bill that would make significant changes to much-maligned farm subsidies. He's undecided on the latest gambit.
Instead, GOP aides said, the House will take up a much smaller measure aimed at dealing with this summer's drought, the worst in about a half-century. The aides required anonymity because rank and file Republicans had not been briefed on the plans.
Many conservative Republicans were unhappy with the prospect of voting for farm subsidies and were also unhappy with simply renewing the food stamp program, which has grown rapidly in recent years.
The existing farm program offers drought protection to most farmers this summer through crop insurance.
The new disaster relief would revive programs that were part of the 2008 farm bill but which expired last year. In particular they affect cattle, pork and other livestock producers who generally do not participate in the federally subsidized insurance programs that will partially shield corn, soybean and other crop producers from drought damage. Growers of some specialty crops like cherries and nursery plants also stand to win relief.
Details were to be released Tuesday night, but earlier estimates put the package's cost at over $600 million.
Republicans plan to bring the measure to the floor under expedited procedures that require a two-thirds vote for passage. But top Peterson, who's support is crucial, said he's undecided whether he'll vote for the measure and was not pleased at cuts to conservation programs.
"I'm not wild about that," Peterson told reporters. "I'm going to withhold judgment until I see what they've got."
House Republican leaders have been reluctant to bring the new five-year farm bill to the floor because of concerns it could go down to an embarrassing defeat. Some GOP conservatives object to the high cost ? nearly $100 billion a year, with 80 percent of that going to the food stamp program that now helps feed some 46 million people ? while some Democrats oppose the bill because it would cut about $1.6 billion a year from food stamps.
But farm groups, as well as the Obama administration, have been pressing the House to act, citing the crisis over the drought as reason to put new farm policy into place as soon as possible. The House and Senate farm bills also restore the expired disaster relief programs.
