Anti-nuke protesters surround Japanese parliament

TOKYO (AP) -- Thousands of people formed "a human chain" around Japan's parliament complex Sunday to demand the government abandon nuclear power ? the latest in a series of peaceful demonstrations on a scale not seen in the nation for decades.

Also Sunday, voters went to the polls in a closely watched election for governor of southwestern Yamaguchi prefecture, where an outspoken anti-nuclear candidate was running. Japanese media reported his loss late Sunday, citing exit polls, although official results had not been tallied.

Protesters said they were angry the government restarted two reactors earlier this month despite safety worries after the multiple meltdowns at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant in March last year. The reactors were the first to return to operation since May, when the last of Japan's 50 working reactors went offline for routine checks.

Banging on drums and waving balloons and banners, protesters marched from a Tokyo park and lined up along the streets around the parliament building chanting, "Saikado hantai," or "No to restarts," and later lit candles.

"All these people have gotten together and are raising their voices," said Shoji Kitano, 64, a retired math teacher who was wearing a sign that read, "No to Nukes."

Kitano said he had not seen such massive demonstrations since the 1960s. He stressed that ordinary Japanese usually don't demonstrate, but were outraged over the restarting of nuclear power.

Similar demonstrations have been held outside the prime minister's residence every Friday evening. The crowds have not dwindled, as people get the word out through Twitter and other online networking. A July 16 holiday rally at a Tokyo park, featuring a rock star and a Nobel laureate, drew nearly 200,000 people.

The crowd appeared to be smaller Sunday. Kyodo News service estimated it at about 10,000 people. Participants said they came from across Japan, underlining the widespread appeal of the protests.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda defended his decision to restart the two reactors at Ohi nuclear plant in central Japan as necessary to maintain people's living standards. Other reactors are also expected to go back online, one by one.

Reports from government and legislative investigations of the Fukushima disaster have done little to allay people's fears. A recent probe blamed a "Japanese mind-set" which it said had allowed collusion between the plant's operator and regulators.

Adding to protesters' frustrations is the support nuclear power has received from regional governments where the plants are located. They said they planned to vote anti-nuclear candidates into office to effect change.

Typically, relatively poor rural and fishing areas, far from Tokyo, have been chosen for construction of nuclear plants, with residents won over with jobs and subsidies. There is a plan to build a nuclear plant in Yamaguchi prefecture, but doubts are growing over whether that can be carried out.

Tetsunari Iida, a candidate in Sunday's Yamaguchi gubernatorial election, opposes that plan and nuclear power in general. Kyodo and other Japanese media said Iida was defeated by old-guard candidate Shigetaro Yamamoto, a former bureaucrat who is more conciliatory toward the government's energy policy.

At the Tokyo protest, however, hospital worker Mika Ohta vowed to vote for anti-nuclear candidates in the next election.

"There is nothing good about nuclear power. It is expensive, gets workers radiated and creates waste," she said. "I'm opposed to this government in every way."

India train fire kills at least 32

At least 32 people were killed Monday when a fire ripped through a coach on an express train as it carried sleeping passengers to the southern Indian city of Chennai, officials said.

The accident, on a long-distance service from New Delhi, occurred in the early hours of the morning near the town of Nellore in Andhra Pradesh state with an electrical short-circuit seen as the most likely cause.

"Thirty-two (bodies) have been pulled out from the coach," Madhusudan Sarma, a senior administrative officer in Nellore district, told AFP, adding that there were still more corpses inside.

Another 26 people have been admitted to hospital, he added.

One carriage was completely gutted, and rescuers were struggling with the fierce temperatures inside the mostly metal structure. Cutting torches were being used to open wider access points for the emergency services.

Images showed dozens of rescuers, survivors and crowds of onlookers milling around as the blackened and twisted bodies of victims were lifted out of the wrecked carriage and laid in rows alongside the railway line.

Family members of the victims wailed and screamed, while other dazed survivors sat around quietly with their belongings.

"I woke up when people were rushing into our compartment, I was in S-10 which was attached to the S-11 coach that caught fire," passenger Shantanu, who gave only one name, told the NDTV news channel.

"There was smoke all around. We tried to open the emergency window, people jumped out of it."

Nellore chief district official B. Sreedhar said preliminary investigations suggested a short circuit near a toilet had triggered the blaze.

"We expect the death toll in the affected coach to be around 30 to 35 people," Sreedhar told NDTV. "The fire spread fast and blocked the door at one end of the coach, so there was only one exit available."

The non-stop train was travelling at 110 kilometers per hour (70 miles per hour) when it passed through Nellore station, where staff noticed the fire and informed the railway authorities.

India's accident-prone rail network is still the main form of long-distance travel in the huge country, despite fierce competition from private airlines.

While new shiny airport infrastructure is springing up across the country, the Indian railways -- a much romanticised legacy of British colonial rule -- often appear stuck in a time-warp.

There were two fatal accidents this May alone, including a collision that killed 25 people near the southern city of Bangalore. Four passengers also died after a train derailed in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sent his condolences to the victims and has asked the national railways ministry to coordinate the relief effort, his office said.

In March, the then railway minister Dinesh Trivedi unveiled a draft budget for 2012-13 that included a major safety upgrade to be financed by across-the-board fare hikes.

But he was forced to withdraw it and resign after a rebellion from his own populist party, the Trinamool Congress, which objected to increasing ticket prices for the poorest travellers.

The National Crime Records Bureau, which gathers the causes of fatalities across India, says 25,705 people in total died on the railways in 2009.

The data is not broken down, but a vast majority of these deaths are people falling from the open doors of carriages or being hit on the tracks, which are mostly unsecured.

India's worst rail accident was in 1981 when a train plunged into a river in the eastern state of Bihar, killing an estimated 800 people.

Homemade tech to reduce India's cyber threats

India should be using only locally-developed technology to fend off cyberespionage activities as foreign-made equipment can be manipulated by other countries for spying.

According to a report by the Economic Times on Sunday, cybersecurity analyst Jiten Jain said there are countries which are subsidizing their domestic IT companies to sell products abroad below cost prices in order to facilitate spying on other nations. This happens not just between feuding nations, but among friendly countries too, he said.

"Only using complete, indigenously-developed technology can save [India] from espionage," Jain said.

The cybersecurity analyst added telecom networks and smartphones can be bugged, and there have been cases in which the equipment automatically updates itself without the user's knowledge. Malware is also evolving and can self-destruct or be programmed for one-time use during the critical stage of a hack, he said.

The report added that Indian authorities urged ethical hackers to work with them to spread awareness and detect vulnerabilities in the networks.

In 2011, a Malaysian university professor expressed similar sentiments as Jain. The professor said Malaysia must develop its own IT security software to reduce data leaks and intelligence breaches from foreign software.

PFT: Peyton 'looks normal' after 1st practice in pads

Richard Bartel, Kevin Kolb, Ryan Lindley, John SkeltonAP

At a Cardinals Fan Fest last month, quarterback Kevin Kolb heard the boo birds.? At the annual Red and White scrimmage on Saturday, a record crowd of roughly 14,500 was more restrained ? despite Kolb?s performance.

According to the Associated Press, Kolb was ?heckled a bit by a few in the crowd? after throwing a pair of interceptions.? Kolb and John Skelton shared snaps with the first-string offense.

?It all comes out of my hands so it?s ultimately on me,? Kolb said.? ?That?s the way I?ll approach it and look at it and move forward.?

Receiver Larry Fitzgerald put the blame more broadly on the entire offense.

?I thought we definitely could have executed better,? Fitzgerald said.? ?That falls on us as players.? This is the first week of camp.? We?re running our base offense.? This is stuff we should be able to do in our sleep.? There?s nobody to blame but the 11 of us breaking the huddle.?

Kolb threw a touchdown pass, Skelton didn?t.? But Skelton didn?t throw any picks.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt cautioned against drawing any conclusions from their respective performances.

?Kevin was the guy that had the second spot in the rotation today so he was playing with the No. 2 line a lot.? In fact, we had a center in there that hadn?t taken any snaps because we had one go down in practice [Friday].? We had some protection issues where he didn?t get a chance to sit in there but he had some dropped balls, too.? It?s kind of hard to evaluate it.? That?s why you don?t make snap judgments when you?re doing this with the quarterbacks.?

Frankly, the fact that Kolb had the second spot in the rotation seems more alarming than his performance.

Then again, maybe Whisenhunt simply wanted to insulate Kolb from the indignity of being greeted by boos.

W.Va. dedicates Upper Big Branch Miners Memorial

WHITESVILLE, W.Va. (AP) ? On the heels of a West Virginia coal mining death, families of the 29 men killed in the Upper Big Branch mine dedicated a memorial Friday to their fallen relatives and those injured in the April 2010 explosion.

An outpouring of support helped complete the memorial a year ahead of schedule, according to the project's volunteers. But still ongoing is a federal criminal investigation into the worst U.S. coal mining disaster in four decades.

The ceremony, which drew public officials along with scores of area coalfield residents, also came as party-line disagreements continue to sideline safety legislation in Congress meant to respond to Upper Big Branch.

Kanawha County coal miner Mark Haynes believes his industry has become safer since Upper Big Branch. The 52-year-old man is part of a motorcycle contingent that ride in parades to honor those killed.

"I know this, that other companies, including the company that I work for, have straightened up their act on a lot of things because of the explosion," Haynes said.

The memorial features a 48-foot long black granite monument with life-size reverse silhouettes of each of the 29 miners. The back of the monument lists their names along with panels that describe the history of coal in West Virginia.

It sits in a small park-like plaza bordered by the Big Coal River on one side and W.Va. Route 3 on the other. Those attending the ceremony sat or stood in the road's northbound lane, with coal trucks frequently passing by.

"It's an honor to be here, and it's an honor to see that they actually recognized the fallen miners," said Doug Griffith of Dry Creek. His brother William Griffith, 54, and his 52-year-old brother-in-law, Carl Acord, were among those killed.

Family members applauded Shelia Combs, who led the effort to build the memorial, and Rob Dinsmore, a state resident and landscape architect who designed it. For several, the tears began to fall with the opening invocation by State Police Chaplain James Mitchell, who had ministered to them immediately after the explosion during rescue efforts. Mitchell cited the Gospel passage that appears along the bottom of the monument, "Come to me, all you who labor, and I will give you rest."

Representatives of the rescue teams removed the monument's shrouding. Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin began his remarks with a moment of silence for Johnny Mack Bryant II, who died at an underground mine about 20 miles from the memorial.

Another speaker, Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., has introduced mine safety legislation prompted by Upper Big Branch for the third time since the disaster.

As in earlier versions, the Robert C. Byrd Mine and Workplace Safety and Health Act launched Thursday proposes further whistleblower protections, harsher penalties for criminal safety violations and a revamped system for declaring a pattern of violations at a mine with chronic safety problems. Upper Big Branch had been cited by federal regulators repeatedly before the explosion.

One of the bill's new provisions also draws from the ongoing federal investigation of the disaster, by barring coal operators from keeping two sets of pre-inspection logs. Then-owner Massey Energy Co. maintained two sets of such books at Upper Big Branch ? an accurate, production-focused record for itself, and a sanitized version to throw off inspectors, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration found.

The bill now also calls for a stricter limit on breathable coal dust, and a revisiting of that standard every five years. This dust causes black lung, an irreversible disease that has contributed to the deaths of more than 70,000 miners since 1970. MSHA's investigation found that at least 17 of the miners killed at Upper Big Branch ? nearly two-thirds of those whose remains had enough lung tissue for testing ? had signs of black lung.

LONDON (AP) ? The Olympic flame took a festive, valedictory lap around London on Thursday, taking in some of the sun-drenched capital's most famous landmarks and getting a royal welcome on the second-to-last day of its trek across Britain.

The torch ? carried by athletes, charity workers and celebrities ? thrilled thousands of Londoners as it swept across Regent's Canal in Camden, through the city's newly renovated neo-gothic train station at St. Pancras and down the winding streets of the ancient City of London. Prince William, his wife Kate, and his brother Prine Harry posed for photographs as torch bearers took the flame to the steps of Buckingham Palace.

At London's Hyde Park, where Thursday's torch relay ended, it was greeted by the London's mayor, who took a swipe at U.S. presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's suggestions that Britain might not be ready to host the games, which formally kick off Friday.

"There's a guy called Mitt Romney who wants to know if we are ready," Johnson asked the screaming crowd. "Are we ready? Yes we are!"

For many Londoners, Thursday was their first glimpse of a golden beacon that has spent the past 68 days traveling up and down the country, from Loch Ness to Land's End, as well as going across the water to Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands.

In the north London neighborhood of Camden, many families with young children got up early to cheer as the torch kicked off its relay at the Victorian-era Roundhouse music hall around 6:50 a.m. Others simply hadn't been to bed.

"It was pretty cool to see it actually," said 19-year-old Anastasia Gribaldi, a Goth who had been out all night clubbing. "It was like: 'Wow, it's the torch!' We weren't expecting it."

The torch completes its 70-day, 8,000-mile (12,900-kilometer) journey on Friday, lighting the Olympic Stadium's cauldron in a ceremony marking the official start of the 2012 London Games. The identity of the final torchbearer is still a closely guarded secret.

The torch cruised past some of the city's most impressive landmarks, including the Houses of Parliament, 10 Downing St. and Buckingham Palace, where it was greeted by Prince William and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Earlier in the day it sped across London's River Thames along with Paralympic champion Ade Adipitan, whose dreadlocks flapped in the wind as he propelled his wheelchair across the slender Millennium Bridge.

Londoners who have spent much of the past few weeks worrying about rain, Olympic security and possible strikes appeared to lighten up.

In the south London borough of Lambeth, flag-waving crowds chanted "We want the torch!" In nearby Wandsworth, 24-year-old John Lake ? a cancer survivor who has raised thousands for the Brain Research Trust ? pumped his fist and waved the torch back and forth as he ran down the road with a mile-wide grin.

"Make some noise!" someone shouted as the crowd erupted into cheers.

The crowds thickened further as the torch made its way back across the Thames, with Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders ? who played Patsy and Edina in the British comedy "Absolutely Fabulous" ? taking the flame for a jaunty walk in London's wealthy Chelsea neighborhood.

On Oxford Street, London's famous shopping thoroughfare, the torch rode on an open-topped, double-decker bus.

Still, not everyone was caught up in the Olympic excitement.

"It was pretty convenient that it came through as I was getting my morning coffee," said Jack Tate, a 28-year-old retail worker in Camden. "Now I can say I've seen it. There's no need to watch any more of this Olympics rubbish for the next few weeks."

Oral drops for dog allergies pass another hurdle

ScienceDaily (July 24, 2012) ? A study reported July 24 at the World Congress of Veterinary Dermatology in Vancouver, British Columbia, shows that placing allergy drops under a dog's tongue can be as effective as allergy injections for controlling skin allergies.

In dogs, allergies to house dust, pollen, and mold cause atopic dermatitis, an itchy skin inflammation. Dogs, like people, can be desensitized through "immunotherapy" using shots or drops that deliver small doses of the allergen to "train" the immune system to tolerate foreign proteins.

Both technologies are now about a century old, but for humans and animals, allergy shots are more commonly used.

Chief author of the new study, Douglas DeBoer, a professor of dermatology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, sees several benefits emerging from the new study, which treated skin allergies in 217 dogs using allergy drops.

About 60 percent of the dogs improved significantly, DeBoer says. The drops were placed under the tongue twice a day, while allergy shots are injected every 14 days or so. Both drops and shots must be performed under a veterinarian's supervision, and their cost is comparable.

Because the drops apparently act through a different mechanism than allergy shots, they even helped dogs who had "failed" allergy shots, DeBoer says.

Dogs, like people, can rarely suffer a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction to allergy shots, resulting in collapse and shock. However, even those dogs treated in the study that had previously had such a dangerous reaction to an allergy shot did not have it with the under-the-tongue method. "Drops appear to be safer than shots in this respect," says DeBoer.

DeBoer was not always so enthusiastic about allergy drops for dogs, says Mary Morris, M.D., of Allergy Associates of La Crosse. In about 1967, her father, Dr. David Morris, started using allergy drops with increasing effect on his allergy patients. Some were farmers with severe mold allergies who suffered aching arms and swelling from allergy shots or could not find the time to visit the clinic for regular shots.

In 2006, Morris says, a clinic employee asked her to try allergy drops on a "poor little golden retriever that was losing most of its coat, scratching uncontrollably. Based on the human protocol we use at the clinic, I made my best guess at the formula for treating a dog, and it worked really well."

Intrigued with the idea of a rigorous study for the treatment on dogs, she searched for an expert in canine skin allergies and DeBoer's name was at the top of the list. He seemed a natural fit -- a world expert in the area who worked at University of Wisconsin-Madison, where both she and her father had gone to medical school.

Unfortunately, DeBoer "was extremely skeptical, and he basically told me no," she says. "I was very disappointed, and kept trying to persuade him this was a good research project." The two agreed on a pilot study of 10 dogs. "If it failed, it wasn't worth pursuing," she says. "But I think much to his surprise, it actually worked."

The outcome, Morris says, "was the study he is going to present in Vancouver."

Morris has licensed the technology to Heska Corp., whose CEO, Robert Grieve, is a former professor at the School of Veterinary Medicine.

With data in hand, DeBoer has overcome his skepticism. Although the drops must be given once or twice a day for at least several months, they have major advantages, he says. "A lot of owners are needle-shy, and would never consider giving allergy shots, and may not even have the dog evaluated for that reason. Now there is an option that is very user-friendly."

And what do the dogs think? "The drops have a slightly sweet flavor, so most dogs actually like them," says DeBoer. "Owners say their dogs consider them a treat and run toward them when they hear the bottle being opened. With the needle, they learn to run away."

Pro Bowl C Kalil predicts Panthers win Super Bowl

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Ryan Kalil believes the Carolina Panthers will win the Super Bowl this season ? and he put his money where his mouth is to prove it.

The Panthers three-time Pro Bowl center took out a full page advertisement in the Charlotte Observer on Wednesday boldly declaring fans will be rewarded for their unwavering support with a "one hundred-percent, sterling silver victory ? the Lombardi Trophy. And it reads: Carolina Panthers, Super Bowl XLVII champions."

That's a bold prediction, particularly for a team coming off a 6-10 season that hasn't won a playoff game since 2005.

But Kalil believes in his teammates.

In the 178-word letter to fans Kalil said something special is happening in Carolina.

"There is a sense of urgency, a winning attitude that I haven't seen before," Kalil wrote. "Fans will see it in the way that we play."

Kalil received support for his decision to go public with his prediction from his teammates, as well as coach Ron Rivera.

"If we don't have 53 guys with the same attitude walking in that building then we have to find 53 guys that do," Rivera said. "What he did is he put how he feels out there. And I think that's great."

Rivera didn't try to downplay Kalil's comments at all.

"I'm right behind him and I feel the same way," said Rivera, now in his second season with the Panthers. "In fact, I'm stepping out in front and saying the same thing. This is a group of men that if they understand and work hard and put it on themselves, who knows, the sky can be the limit."

Panthers linebacker Jon Beason said when he saw ad he snapped a picture on his phone and immediately put it out on Twitter.

"I loved what he did," Beason said.

Beason said the key this year will be to make big strides on defense, a unit that finished 27th in the league last season.

"Watching what took place last year, especially on the offensive side of the ball, I think we're really close," Beason said. "Defense we have to get guys healthy and I think we have more maturity out there this year, which will help us. I don't think we can do worse than last year on defense."

Defensive end Charles Johnson backed Kalil, too.

"I agree with him," Johnson said. "People don't say it publicly, but I agree with him. It's all good with me. We have the potential. We have everything we need to win it."

Rivera said he doesn't believe the advertisement puts a target on the Panthers chest.

"No, because everybody else believes the same thing," Rivera said. "(Kalil) just said it. If you ask all 32 teams, their attitude has to be that. You have to believe that. If you don't you won't work as hard as you should."

Beason said he welcomes the pressure.

"The pressure is great. I love pressure," Beason said. "A lot of times you are doing what you're doing and you get comfortable because you get into a routine. So when you get challenged for something, I like that. Pressure is an opportunity to do something great."

Rivera said he's been around bold predictions before.

When he was a linebacker with the Chicago Bears, Rivera remembers coach Mike Ditka making a similar comment to his players prior to training camp.

"Mike came in his first year and told everybody 'I have good news and bad news. The good news is we're going to the Super Bowl. The bad news is some of you aren't going,'" Rivera said.

Thread: Mayonnaise Jar & Two Beers... - Family Woodworking

Mayonnaise Jar & Two Beers...

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, When 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 Beers.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.

When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large andempty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with

golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full.

They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.

The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the

golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full.

They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.

Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

He asked once more if the jar was full?

The students responded with a unanimous 'yes.'

The professor then produced two beers (Coors light) from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand.

The students laughed!

'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.

The golf balls are the important things---your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car..

The sand is everything else---the small stuff.

'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.

The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Spend time with your children.

Spend time with your parents.

Visit with grandparents.

Take your spouse out to dinner.

Play another 18 holes of golf.

There will always be time to clean the house, fix the disposal or deal with things from your job.

Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter.

Set your priorities.

The rest is just sand.

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the beer represented.

The professor smiled and said, 'I'm glad you asked.'

The beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of beers with a friend.

Iran's "chicken crisis" is simmering political issue

DUBAI (Reuters) - Earlier this month, Iran's national police chief ventured boldly into what has become known as the country's "chicken crisis." The feathers haven't stopped flying since.

The soaring price for a staple food that Iranians relish cooked with saffron, plums or pomegranates has become such a hot topic of public debate, and a sign of the sinking purchasing power of many Iranians, that Police Chief Esmail Ahmadi Moghaddam felt it his duty to intervene.

He urged television stations to avoid broadcasting images of people eating chicken, saying such pictures could fire up social tensions, with perhaps unforeseen consequences.

"Certain people witnessing this class gap between the rich and the poor might grab a knife and think they will get their share from the wealthy," Mehr news agency quoted him as saying.

As far as is known, no one has gone to that extreme, but as Iran's economy struggles with erratic government management and international sanctions imposed over the country's disputed nuclear program, prices of food and fuel have jumped across the board in the past 18 months.

At around 65,000 rials, or over $5 at the official exchange rate, a kilo (2.2 lb) of chicken is now nearly three times the price it was a year ago. That makes it hard to afford for many in a country where gross national income per capita was about $4,520 in 2009, or $377 per month, according to the most recent estimate by the World Bank.

The surge in the price is mainly due to the exorbitant cost of importing chicken feed with Iran's weakened currency, which on the black market is more than 40 percent lower against the U.S. dollar than it was at the start of this year.

DINNER TABLES

With chicken becoming rarer on middle- and working-class dinner tables, many Iranians are expressing their frustration with mordant humor.

Iranian cartoonist Mana Neyestani, who lives in France, mocked Ahmadi Moghaddam's warning with a cartoon of a young man watching a pornographic film. His father tries to cover up only the image of a roast chicken in the background of the film, saying: "How many times have I told you not to watch films with chicken in them?"

Photographer Arash Ashoorinia published on his website a range of images showing delectable chicken dishes. "It's possible that publishing these kinds of photos will be banned. Of course I had many more beautiful photos, but I wouldn't want to act against national security!" he wrote underneath.

Iran's social networks are buzzing. "There are two classes of people: below the chicken line and above the chicken line," quipped one Twitter posting from a Shiraz resident.

Another tweet joked that instead of asking for traditional gold coins, soon-to-be-married Iranian women would request dowries of 200 tonnes of chicken.

Officials, worried about popular resentment, have done their best to assure irate Iranians that chicken will be in plentiful supply and at fair prices.

There have been widely announced fines for those found to be profiteering, proclamations on the provision of government-subsidized chicken for the holy month of Ramadan, and reassurances that tonnes of healthy stock will soon be available at market.

Pictures of queues of people hoping to buy government-subsidized chicken have been widely carried in state-influenced Iranian media in the last several weeks - apparently to demonstrate that the government is addressing the problem.

Officials maintain Iran has endured more than three decades of economic sanctions and can withstand plenty more. Some government figures, including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, have described the sanctions as a blessing that will wean the country off foreign goods and dependence on oil income.

But for now, at least, Iran's chicken industry remains dependent on the outside world. Much of the soya beans and corn fed to broiler chickens is imported from abroad.

Talking to Reuters by telephone, a veteran chicken producer in Iran, who asked not to be named, blamed the price rises on government mismanagement as well as the sanctions.

"Around half the chicken farms have stopped production because it has become too expensive to buy the imported raw materials," he said, citing the sharp increases in the cost of feed and imported vaccines.

"We are so sorry about the situation but it's impossible to bring the price down. It's very upsetting for so many Iranians."

POLITICS

With opposition activity in Iran tightly controlled, the chicken crisis, and the country's general economic distress, look unlikely for now to prompt wide protests that could challenge the government's hold on power.

But the price of chicken has become an issue in national politics, where some anti-Ahmadinejad members of parliament are publicly denouncing rivals in the executive branch for failing to prepare for the crisis.

"Livestock and poultry dealers gave warnings eight months ago about the lack of hay and feed," said Ali Larijani, head of Iran's parliament and a rival to Ahmadinejad, according to the Iranian Students' News Agency.

Ahmadinejad has faced increasing criticism over his economic record since introducing reforms in 2010 that withdrew generous subsidies to nearly all Iranians in favor of cash handouts; the reforms have contributed to inflation.

Although the government's policy of supplying subsidized chicken has partially eased the problem, as a public relations gesture it risks backfiring by reminding some Iranians of the worst days of the economy during the devastating Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s.

"There are queues for chicken every day," said Ayhan, a university professor living in Tehran. "It reminds me of 1981."

Texas Instruments 2Q Results Miss Expectations

Texas Instruments (TXN) said second-quarter results were below expectations, and warned that apprehension about a global economic slowdown weighed down customer demand.

The company forecast third-quarter earnings in the range of 34 to 42 cents a share, on revenue between $3.21 billion and $3.47 billion, below the Street?s expectation for earnings of 50 cents a share on revenue of $3.54 billion.

"Although we believe customers and distributors have low inventory levels, the global economic environment is causing both to become increasingly cautious in placing new orders,? said Rich Templeton, chairman, president and CEO of TI in a statement. ?Our backlog grew last quarter but orders slowed in the month of June and our backlog coverage for September is lower than normal.?

Templeton went on to warn that third-quarter revenue would be even with last quarter and below the average growth rate for the quarter, and mentioned that the company has a strong inventory and available manufacturing capacity and short product lead times which will allow TI to respond should customer demand ramp up mid-quarter.

The semiconductor giant saw second-quarter profit fall to $446 million, or 38 cents a share, down from last year?s profit $672 million, or 45 cents a share, as revenue slipped to $3.34 billion, down from year-ago sales of $3.46 billion

The results missed expectations on both the top and bottom line; analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted earnings of 41 cents a share on revenue of $3.35 billion.

Shares of Texas Instruments are down nearly 8% so far this year.? The stock fell 1.6% during the regular session Monday, and was down 1% in after-hours trading.

Game of the Week: Advance Wars | Video Games, Reviews ...

A seminal strategy release for the Game Boy Advance, Advance Wars is rightly lauded as among the cr?me de la cr?me of the console?s output. In a rather esoteric genre, this title succeeded in lending a gregarious appeal to traditionally nerd-tacular pursuits. Further, blending the impossible dichotomy of tactical nous and accessibility is a task worthy of one of the labours of Hercules (shovelling a great expanse of horse faeces, rolling a boulder up a hill, whatever else the poor soul had to do), yet it was accomplished here with aplomb. Let?s see why the game is so universally acclaimed.

Advance Wars finds the Orange Star army attacked by the (seemingly) belligerent commander of the Blue Moon forces, Olaf. You will take the role of several C.Os, serving the role of Orange Star?s tactician of sorts. The campaign will lead you betwixt nations on the map, as you reveal the treachery of your true aggressor; eventually uniting with your former foes to mitigate the peril.

Combat takes a turn-based bent, seeing you moving your army as individual units on the map with a ?move? each. Each can attack once if they are within range, or simply end the turn in a new area. This done, the day ends and the demise-dealers of your opponent encroach upon you. To achieve glorious victory, avec fist-pumping, carrying-on-the-shoulders-of-lesser-mortals, ticker tape parades and other theatrical shenanigans, you must destroy every enemy unit or capture their base, a small building lurking innocuously on the map.

Advance Wars Screenshot

It?s a simple concept, encompassing a disconcerting myriad of tactical nuances. To build a formidable array of warmongers, you must purchase them individually, at bases, ports or airports. As such, you must capture cities to accrue revenue at the outset of each new turn. Only infantry are able to do so, but they have all the pugilistic proficiency of a drunken octogenarian. Your task, then, is one of resource management. Progressing too hastily to the more powerful units, or doing so in an indolent manner, will both doom your efforts. It?s a delicate dichotomy of action and reaction, to both counter and overcome whatever is being sent your way.

The spectrum of units available is almost divinely inspired, with a deftly-tuned chess-tastic feel. Attacking infantry with a tank, for example, will see the khaki crusaders decimated. Conversely, if a bomber can reach the aforementioned artillery as a result, it will be destroyed in a catastrophic conflagration of piteous uselessness. An encroaching Anti-Air vehicle, by the same token, will ensure that the plane has nary another chance to unleash its malevolent payload; in a manner akin to an angry pigeon scheming to take a dump on a parked car. There is an antiphon for every type of assault, and the tactical nuances of the combat are further augmented by other considerations. Certain terrain will reduce movement speed, such as treaded vehicles suffering in forest spaces. Fog of War, which obscures your view of the area and the opponent?s army, exacerbates this further. Infantry units can climb mountains, exclusive access to terrain that no other ground units can traverse. Strategy fans are sure to revel in the considerable depth of the mechanics.

Which is a remarkable feat, when we consider the endearing aesthetic festooned upon every pixel of Advance Wars. As is plain from the screenshots, characters, campaign maps and combat alike are charmingly stylised. Like the innocuous-looking pigtailed girl in the playground who purloins your lunch money and kicks you in the delicate groin area, it?s an odd dichotomy, but a formidable one. Further, it does become nut-numbing difficult, but is equipped with a sublime learning curve. The game does not exclude fledgling tacticians, nor does it pander to them. As such, it provides an enjoyable, remorselessly addictive and substantial package for anyone, regardless of their rabid support/general indifference to strategy titles.
