Dollars and sense: Why are some people morally against tax?

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

As the U.S. presidential election campaigns heat up, the economic debate is dominated by bailouts, austerity and, inevitably, taxation. Now a new study published in Symbolic Interaction asks why tax is such an important issue to voters and explores the moral ideas which underpin their views.

Americans are famously hostile to taxes even though they are not heavily taxed in comparison to Canadians and the British. In their study Dr Jeff Kidder and Dr Isaac Martin, from Northern Illinois University and the University of California-San Diego, explore how middle class feelings of exploitation lie behind this hostility.

"Everyday tax talk among the middle class is not simply part of a wider ideological view about economics or free markets," said Kidder. "Tax talk is morally charged and resonates with how Americans see themselves and their place in society."

The researchers conducted 24 semi-structured, open-ended interviews with taxpayers in the Southern states who owned or managed small businesses to discover how they talk about taxes in everyday life. Entrepreneurs are a demographic group which is typically strongly anti-tax, while the Southern States provide many supporters for the radical Tea Party.

Respondents saw themselves as morally deserving and hard-working people, sandwiched between an economically more powerful group that manipulates the rules for its own benefit and a subordinate group that benefits from government spending but escapes taxation.

"We found that people associate income tax with a violation of the moral principle that hard work should be rewarded," said Kidder. "Our research shows that when Americans lash out at 'takeovers,' 'massive taxes' and 'bailouts,' they are looking at these issues from the perspective of a hard-working middle class besieged on all sides. Tax talk is about dollars, but it is also about a moral sense of what is right."

It is typically believed that those who are anti-tax will also be hostile to government aid for the poor and minorities. However, rich recipients of bailouts were also disparaged as people who did not deserve money because they did not work for it.

"A lot of the tax talk you will hear from politicians this election season makes no sense as arithmetic," Martin said. "But it makes sense as an appeal to the moral sensibilities of small business."

"Our research shows that tax talk is not actually about individual self-interest, but about our respondents' sense of the proper relations among groups," concluded Kidder. "It's a view summed up by one respondent: Don't take my paycheck."

Mac Pro Fans Launch Sad Facebook Campaign For Upgrade [Apple]

There's been strong indication that Apple is contemplating killing off the Mac Pro. But a sad, small group of creative professionals is crying out for Cupertino to give them new machines. Problem is, their clamoring probably won't be heard, because their bleak little group—We Want a New Macpro—only has a paltry 54 likes. More »

The Penny Inventory E-newsletter
Listed here we go over a few of inquiries and answers relating to penny stocks.

What are penny stocks?

Penny shares are shares in general public companies. Not like the shares and shares in larger blue chip organizations, penny stocks trade at a lot less than $ 1.00 every, which helps make then a fantastic way for newcomers to dip a toe in the fascinating earth of stocks and shares investment.

Investing in penny shares has the potential to make you critically wealthy and some blessed people have created a fortune with just a single trade. Even so, this is rare and most of the time, you will require to be disciplined enough to see penny stocks financial investment as a extended time period enterprise rather than a get-wealthy-quick scheme.

What are the negatives of investing in penny shares?

Acquiring penny stocks needs money, and not every person has spare money lying around. You may well feel investing in shares and shares is a excellent way to create up a nest egg for a great holiday getaway / rapidly car / comfortable retirement fund but, sadly, in this instance you have to invest cash to make funds.

You also need some kind of system that warns you when the time is correct to offer your penny stocks. Ideally, the way to make funds on penny stocks is to get reduced and market high. Sounds easy, appropriate? Properly except if you have a very good system that warns you when your penny shares are about to drop in price, you may well finish up shedding money as a substitute of generating a income.

Trading in penny stocks is notoriously susceptible to market manipulation and over the a long time there have been many frauds connected to penny stocks. Specified folks have bought up huge numbers of shares in a specified company to inflate its industry benefit, and then flooded the industry with the very same shares to make a huge revenue at the cost of scaled-down merchants.

What is the greatest way to decrease chance in penny stocks financial investment?

It is never a good notion to invest income that you cannot manage to lose. If you are down to your last $ one,000 and shedding it would indicate shedding your house, do not gamble on the inventory market. But if you have some spare money and the imagined of making some further is desirable, then go for it.

Penny shares can supply some excellent returns if you commit in the correct companies, but you need to decide on your penny shares wisely and have a very good system in place to protect you from massive losses. In the starting, try out investing employing pretend income. Decide on some penny stocks and see how they execute. If at the stop of the period you have made a earnings, it is time to attempt investing genuine cash!

Peter Van Buren & the State Department's Suppression of Free ...

State Department employee Peter Van Buren (photo: Peter Van Buren)

The State Department has taken action against one of its employees, which the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) believes is in retaliation for criticism of the State Department?s reconstruction efforts in Iraq.

The ACLU sent a letter that highlights the adverse measures taken against State Department employee, Peter Van Buren, because he published a tell-all book,?We Meant Well:?How I?Helped Lose the Battle for the Hearts and Minds of the Iraqi People. The letter objects to the State Department?s move to fire Van Buren, who has been an employee for twenty-four years.

I spoke with Van Buren, whose reaction to the ACLU?s decision to send a stern letter to the State Department was one of great appreciation. The ACLU had been helping him throughout the year to better understand his own rights as a government employee. He had been helping them understand his situation;? the group had been providing information and support. However, he did not expect them to use his case to make such a strong statement about the free speech rights of all government employees:

I was very pleased that the ACLU in their statement not only supported me strongly but in fact rolled my case into the broader picture. This is about federal employees being able to speak to the people we serve. Standard story is if we don?t tell you what?s going on inside of government there?s no way you?re going to know. Now, it looks like the ACLU thinks the Constitution protects us in doing that.

Indeed, the ACLU letter asserts that ?given the enormous public interest in receiving speech? on the subject of the reconstruction in Iraq, there is likely no way the State Department could ever properly demonstrate that their interests outweigh Van Buren?s free speech rights. The group notes the Supreme Court has previously decided ?public employees retain?their First Amendment rights even when speaking about issues directly related?to their employment, as long as they are speaking as private citizens.? It is clear that Van Buren?s book, blog posts and articles are written by him and that he is speaking ?in his own voice and not on behalf of the State Department.? ?Writing blog posts and articles from home, on his own?time and on his personal computer,? is speech that government employees like Van Buren may engage in as private citizens.

The State Department has claimed Van Buren did not have permission to publish his book. The issue over the publication gets to the core of the issue, which is that the State Department is seeking to restrain Van Buren?s speech and has been violating his civil liberties. As Van Buren explains, his book was approved under State Department guidelines:

?If the State Department doesn?t object after 30 days, you are free to publish (and in fact I gave them 45 days). And so my book was cleared and published in accordance with the rules. What the State Department is trying to do now is make up for what they think is a mistake and instead claim that every blog post, every interview (including this one), every Twitter post, every Facebook thing ? has to go through a 30-day clearance process and if I don?t do that then I am violating their laws, acting insubordinate and all of these other things. You and I are actually committing an act of civil disobedience right now because I am not asking State Department?s permission to speak with you.

Now what?s happened in practice is that when I have asked them permission to speak with reporters or to write things, the permission is denied. In one instance I asked for permission to read from my book at a local bookstore? You know how authors do that? And they denied me permission to read from the book. Kind of silly. In protest, I showed up to the event and asked someone from the audience to read from the book aloud while I sat there with my mouth closed. [emphasis added]

Since the publication of the book, his personal blog posting has been increasingly monitored and scrutinized. He is now a teleworker. And every two weeks his boss calls him for what Van Buren calls the ?hour of pain,? where he is shown a printout of the blog posts he has put up or whatever they have been able to find that has put up with statements from him that were made without the State Department?s approval.

?If they see that I have done an interview, if they notice an article on Firedoglake that I?ve contributed to, it?s on the list. And they go through the list and ask me individually did I write this or did I do the interview and did I get permission. They then remind me that I have violated their rules and regulations. We go through it on a regular basis. It?s almost something that?s done perfunctorily. [emphasis added]

Every now and then, Van Buren adds, the State Department will find something they really want to go after him over.? One example involves a blog post he put up including a WikiLeaks link?not a document, not a leak but a link to a WikiLeaks cable that he included in a blog post.

Van Buren has an awareness of what government employees are allowed to do as employees of other agencies or departments in the US government. He does not find these other agencies or departments to be terribly restrictive when it comes to free speech.

The Defense Department has a policy that allows employees to blog ?about?anything that isn?t what they call operational,? which means they don?t want soldiers revealing the location of convoys or the fact that a unit is currently low on ammunition. Other government agencies like the CIA may be restrictive but, seeing as they deal in covert operations, there is probably much justification to policies aimed at keeping employees quiet. In contrast, the State Department says ?every single thing I write is under their control. Whether I am blogging about the dissidents in Syria or the conflict in Syria or Iraq or Canada, they claim that I have no right to publish any of that and so in that sense the nation?s organ that speaks loudly about freedom and democracy to foreigners has one of the most restrictive policies.?

The hypocrisy of the State Department has been highlighted by Van Buren on his blog. It is something that has been deeply troubling to him.

I?m not a newbie. I understand how things work. I?m not a disgruntled employee. I had a good time and was successful throughout my career. When I see this level of hypocrisy ramping up, it makes me really sad. When I turn to one page on the Internet and there?s Secretary of State Clinton arguing for the rights of a blind dissident in China and then I click to another page on the Internet and there?s Sec. Clinton?s people telling me that I can?t blog because it would destroy government as we know it. That kind of black and white hypocrisy is more than I accept, even after 24 years in the government. And it?s more than I?ve seen previously. My career has spanned a pretty broad ? Ronald Reagan was president when I started at the State Department and I?ve been through two Bushes, Clinton ? been a lot of variation in government, bouncing between left and right. Now is the time when I?ve seen most oppressive and repressive statements by our own government against our own people including in this case me. [emphasis added]

The reality is something that Van Buren fully grasps. The Obama administration has been the ?most aggressive administration in the history of the United States against whistleblowers and free speech.? The Espionage Act, a law passed?in 1917 during World War I to go after German spies, has been used six times against government employees and whistleblowers. Prior to Obama, it had only been used against whistleblowers three times.

What is happening to Van Buren is, as he says, part of a ?government-wide effort to silence dissent, to stomp down on free speech, to say that the government should be able to operate in whatever level of secrecy it cares to.? That is wrong. Government employees should be able to speak openly and, indeed, they should not feel that if they want to reveal information (that isn?t classified) they must speak to press anonymously.

Indeed, speaking to press anonymously would seem to encourage the culture of selective leaking in Washington, DC. If Van Buren and other government employees can openly speak, it is much easier to separate the whistleblowers and those dedicated to good government practices from those who are possibly insiders or people sharing information for purely political purposes that make internal bureaucratic battles worse.

It is not abnormal for the government to use pre-publication review against employees in the way that the State Department has used the process against Van Buren. The unspoken rule is even though there is that 30-day provision, an employee is better off waiting hundreds of days instead of risking a threat to his or her career or livelihood.

It is incredibly heavy-handed and utterly absurd to subject every employee of any agency or department in government to any guideline that requires prior approval for any communication an employee wishes to make that relates to the work they do in government. The fact that Van Buren and the ACLU must challenge the government so those working for government can enjoy free speech rights like all US citizens is unfortunate, as it shows how the cancer of secrecy has spread and continues to spread.

What Van Buren and the ACLU are doing is undoubtedly a public service, and should they succeed in their advocacy and, in Van Buren?s case, their ?civil disobedience,? government employees will be better off.

Heart Attack Prevention Starts Now

Did you know that?the leading cause of death in the United States is heart attack? Most of those who die suddenly of Heart Disease will have?no " warning signs ". Whether you are in your 20s and have no history of heart disease in your family?or in your 50s and wanting to take steps to avoid it, here are seven ways to prevent having a heart attack. The source of ALL heart disease is inflammation! ?

1. Add Lemon?

Almost everyone has heart disease. Heart disease is simply the accumulation of plaque in your arteries. If you want to learn more about heart disease, buy our book Diabetes Diet. We go through this subject extensively in the heart section of our book. Lemon is your absolute best line of defense in heart disease. It dissolves the calcium that binds?plaque together. Lemon sweeps away artery plaque.?

Squeeze one lemon in the morning 15 minutes before you eat.

Add 1oz of fresh lemon juice to 8oz purified water. Sweeten to taste. Do this every morning for at least 1 month. Lemon juice does NOT cause acid. It is actually less acidic that your stomach acid. To eliminate acid please go to our acid section click here now?www.diabetesdiet.me?.

2. STOP Eating Long Chain Fatty Acids

Long chain fatty acids include all vegetable oils. Also on the do not eat list are any hydrogenated oils, soy and canola oil. These oils will clog your arteries fast by creating inflammation. Add short to medium chain fatty acids like palm and coconut oil. One tablespoon of flax seed oil in cold form each day is okay.

3. Eliminate ALL Bleached and Enriched Wheat Flour Out Of Your Life

These flours not only kill your beta cells (insulin) , they make you fat by increasing the production of triglycerides. The only grains you should be eating are the ones that say 100% whole grains or sprouted grains.

4. Eat or Juice Fresh Fruits and/or Vegetables

Eat or juice at least 2 fruits and 2 vegetables a day.

5. Drink " Natural Sources " 100% Black Cherry juice?

Drink at least 1 oz of 100% Cherry juice each day. Cherry juice?eliminates a very destructive force in our body called uric acid. Not only does uric acid cause arthritis it is also the main cause for kidney failure. You will also want to add Acidophilus Pearls to your diet.

6. Stress Less

Research suggests a relationship between stress and the risk for coronary heart disease. Stress itself can put a strain on your body and cause acid and inflammation. Add oxygen to your life if possible. Oxygen has been found to heal a multitude of health problems including cancer. Get an oxygen machine today.

7. Live in Peace

By accepting Jesus into your heart as your Lord and savior you can begin to live in peace. You can now pray and ask God to resolve your burdens. You can finally live by faith and not by fear.

If you have not accepted Jesus into your heart, just say this small prayer. Dear Jesus I know you died on the cross for my sins. I know accept your forgiveness and ask for you to be the lord and savior of my life. That is it. You are now?saved and your sins have been washed away forever.?Now make a list of all your fears and burdens and ask for God to resolve them. Every time you start having fear about something stop and say I now live by faith and God is going to resolve this situation for me. Check out Joel Osteen he is an awesome preacher on TV. Oprah even endorses him.?

Visit the American Heart Association to determine your risks.

News and Society Blog-Environmental Info: How Diamond Mining ...

ByMitch Gavillion

Today, diamonds are the most valuable stones in the world not only because of their beauty, but also because of their utility. Diamonds are not only specifically cut for use in jewelry, but they are also used for special cutting tools like saw blades and drills because the stones are extremely hard and durable. Like everything else in the world, diamonds come with a cost and often times the environment and the people in communities surrounding diamond mines foot the bill.

Diamond Mining Means Destruction

Whether diamond mines are responsibly managed or not, environmental destruction is inevitable and like most types of mines the area surrounding the mine is adversely effected. Most diamond mines are open pit mines requiring the digging of thousands of square meters of land. Some diamond operations are conducted on the beach or off shore, in which case retaining walls are built to protect the mine from waves and tidal fluctuations. In these cases, large quantities of sand and rock (and sometimes coral reefs) are removed from the mine and placed elsewhere.

The Government's Role in Reducing Damage

The results of such mining techniques can be catastrophic is left unmanaged. In many African countries that are rich in diamond reserves, yet poor in the enforcement of mining laws, the open pit mines are left once all the diamonds are extracted and the excavated dirt is left to run off onto farmland and into rivers. In some countries where the diamond industry is regulated more closely there exist reclamation programs that aim to restore lands that have been strip mined. Often times these operations promise to fill in the excavated areas and replant the land with native foliage. However, these operations are not always successful because it often times takes decades for an ecosystem to become established and often times the animals that play a necessary role in the process have been pushed far away from the location in question. Another adverse effect on the environments surrounding diamond mines is related to the local communities that interact with the mines.

Blood Diamonds

Many environmental and civil rights activists are working hard to reduce the occurrence of conflict diamonds in politically unstable countries like Africa. These "blood diamonds," as they are often called, are the result of tribal disputes over land that diamond mining operations become subversively involved in. The diamond mining operations create a situation that allows them to profit from diamond extraction in the disputed area. Many consumers today are becoming more aware of these socio-political issues related to diamond extraction and some diamond certification organizations have been created to track and monitor mining practices around the world.

Finding Responsible Practices

While diamonds are highly useful in industrial processes and are incredibly beautiful in jewelry, it is important to keep their environmental side effects in mind. While it is possible to obtain diamonds that are free from political turmoil, it remains challenging to find diamonds that are mined in an environmentally sustainable method. The diamond worth in many African nations is actually decreased by practices that are unsustainable and irresponsible. This will have to change if these nations want to participate in the ever growing market for responsibly mined diamonds.

Mitchell Gavillion writes on the environment from his hometown of Los Angeles, CA.

Chinese-made smartphones include lovely bezel design and a backdoor into all your data, but mostly a backdoor into all your data

The People's Republic of China (or PRC) is a land rife with slave labor, pollution, intellectual property theft, and repression of religion. In other words, it's Thomas Friedman's (pronounced: fried-man's) ideal society.

And the cyberwar that the PRC (or, rather, the People's Liberation Army or PLA) is waging worldwide, much of it against American assets, continues apace, unremarked upon by the President, his sycophants or the State Department.

Exhibit 9 million: A lovely backdoor installed on Chinese-made smartphones:

The ZTE Score M is an Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread) phone available in the United States on MetroPCS, made by Chinese telecom ZTE Corporation.

There is a setuid-root application at /system/bin/sync_agent that serves no function besides providing a root shell backdoor on the device. Just give the magic, hard-coded password to get a root shell:

$ sync_agent ztex1609523
# id
uid=0(root) gid=0(root)

Nice backdoor, ZTE.

darn, geek.com says it is real.....

If anyone reading this owns a ZTE Score M Android smartphone, your device has been found to include a backdoor allowing root access without user authentication.
The discovery of the backdoor comes via a post on the text storage website Pastebin. It has since been confirmed via Reddit by Justin Case of Cunning Logic and TeamAndIRC. He has confirmed with someone at ZTE that the backdoor does indeed exist and that a fix is in the works.

Oh look, we'll just make a master key!? You locked that door?? :-)
Nice guys, nice.... oh and ZTE makes more than phones -- they're the 5th largest telecommunications manufacturer in the world.?

It's imperative that more Americans become aware of the danger to our information infrastructure posed by the PLA. I, for one, would be hard-pressed to trust any technology made in the PRC.

And that's a lesson that many companies have learned the hard way.

Joseph Nowinski, Ph.D.: What Is Your 'Relationship' With Alcohol ...

The title of her book, Drinking: A Love Story, by Caroline Knapp, succinctly captured the essence of the late author's gradual descent into alcoholism. The end point of this tragic journey lies at the far right end of the drinking spectrum, depicted below. In order to get to that final stage, however, Ms. Knapp had to first pass through two other areas that define problem drinking, including a large gray zone that until now has received little attention. This is the "almost alcoholic" zone, and helping people to identify at what point they may have slipped into this zone offers them an opportunity: to pause, reflect, and ultimately to decide if they want to pursue solutions for turning back.

2012-05-12-AlmostAlcoholicGrayscaleDiagram2.JPG

Three Kinds of "Relationship"

One way that we have found useful in terms of thinking about the different zones in the above diagram is in terms of different degrees of relationship. Just as our interpersonal relationships can differ in terms of intensity, so can our "relationship" with drinking. Moreover, these differences aren't separated by sharp lines; rather, they tend to blend into one another. Let's look at these different kinds of relationships.

"Casual Friendship"

People whose relationship with alcohol falls into this stage drink primarily in social settings. This is what we mean by "normal social drinking." It's a glass or two of wine at a wine-and-cheese get-together among friends, a couple of beers at the Sunday afternoon football party with friends, or an occasional happy hour cocktail with people from work. If we do drink alone at this stage of use, it is not typically on a daily basis, and it involves only a drink or two in one sitting.

Social users never binge, and they are neither psychologically nor physically "dependent" on drinking, for example, in order to overcome social anxiety. People have used alcohol socially -- indeed, it has been called a "social lubricant" -- for literally centuries. Drinking in this context is said to help people "loosen up" or "relax." Indeed, in small quantities alcohol may do this. A glass of wine or a beer can take the edge off just about any common stress we may be feeling. It can lower our inhibitions us just a bit (hence the term "unwind"), and thereby facilitate social interaction. Negative consequences, of course, can occur at any stage of drinking, but they are relatively rare at this stage. Viewed in terms of a relationship, at this stage alcohol can best be thought of as a casual friend. In terms of the drinking spectrum, a casual friendship with alcohol falls at the left end.

"Relationship"

When we say we've gone from being casual friends with someone to having a "relationship" with them we are implying a stronger connection. So it is with alcohol. In this second stage, a person has learned to use alcohol consistently for one of two reasons: either to create certain positive feelings (e.g., relaxation, euphoria) or else to avoid certain negative feelings (e.g., anxiety, loneliness).

This type of drinking is represented by the large gray area that we have defined as the "almost alcoholic" zone on the drinking spectrum. It is indeed a "gray area" because, first, there is no sharp line that separates normal social drinking from becoming an almost alcoholic. Second, there are even degrees within that zone, with some people being much closer to true alcoholism than others. In other words, as a person moves to the right on the drinking spectrum the stronger their "relationship" with alcohol becomes.

Rather than stepping over a sharp line in the sand, a person gradually slips away from social drinking ("casual friendship") and into almost alcoholic drinking ("relationship"). At some point the symptoms and behavior patterns associated with being an almost alcoholic start to appear, especially drinking consistently alone and in an effort to either create feelings (relaxation) or mute them (anxiety, depression), or to influence behavior (to socialize, to get to sleep). At this point alcohol has become a reliable "buddy."

Drinking at this stage makes a person more vulnerable to certain negative consequences, such as more frequent hangovers, unpredictable mood changes, or lack of concentration and mental acuity. If we move deeper into the almost alcoholic zone, our bodies become less efficient at metabolizing alcohol, with the result that we feel tipsy more quickly, which can lead us to behave in ways that later embarrass us. Finally, at this stage loved ones become aware of our drinking and may experience a degree of "jealousy" over our relationship with alcohol.

"Commitment"

This corresponds to the two areas at the far right of the drinking spectrum: alcohol abuse and alcoholism. These stages, which are associated with severe symptoms and consequences that qualify for a formal diagnosis, mark the end of the "love affair." At this stage, drinking has progressed from being a serious relationship to the level of what could be called a commitment that the drinker has made with alcohol. The committed drinker makes sure that he or she is never far from alcohol. Over time, his or her life style begins to revolve around more and more around drinking. One husband described how his wife, as she moved into this stage of drinking, refused to go anywhere that she could not drink. She refused, for example, to take a bus tour with him to visit three national parks because she could not take liquor on the bus. And as one wife put it, "My husband won't go anywhere without his cooler. It's as attached to him as his wedding ring."

By the time drinking has progressed to this stage, loved ones begin to harbor deep resentments and can become increasingly alienated from this commitment that is not only intimate (like a marriage) but which seriously competes with or overshadows the drinker's other commitments -- to spouses, children, friends and work.

Once drinking has become a commitment, turning back and returning to normal social drinking is extremely difficult, if not impossible. If a committed drinker wants to do that, I strongly recommend that he or she begin with an extended period of abstinence -- six months at a minimum. The help of a counselor experienced with treating addictions is also essential.

In contrast, men and women who realize that they have slipped somewhere into the almost alcoholic zone have many more options available to them. Unlike Ms. Knapp, they may still have the option of "shifting left" and ending their relationship before it becomes a commitment.

HTC Titan II Review: Sometimes A Win-Win Is A Lose

IMG_0009I've been spending some quality time with HTC's Titan II, and I would never call it a bad phone. But that's not the question ? good, bad, fast, slow, ugly, beautiful... they don't matter unless I feel that I'd put down money and live my life with this device. And even though I expected this to be one of my favorites, I walk away from my review certain that I wouldn't exchange cash for this handset. HTC is great at building quality hardware and Microsoft's new mobile platform is fresh, different, and intuitive.
